“I found a mom and brought her in and let her have her kittens, but now they are all grown up, can you help me place them?”
“I tried to feed a group of cats in my neighborhood, but some are sick, and a few kittens have died, and I need to get them tested, what do I do?”
“I have a neighbor who has lots of cats but I’m just letting you know so you can do something about it because he won’t and I can’t due to personal circumstances.”
“I found a cat and he’s in terrible medical shape, what should I do?”
“I’m a rescuer. I found a cat, fed it and offered it shelter but I certainly can’t afford to get it fixed, so someone else has to take it because I rescued it from dying and I did my part, because I’m a rescuer.”
Trap and Neuter EVERY outside cat you see. TNR includes their vaccines that protect cats from three serious and contagious diseases: feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline calicivirus and feline panleukopenia, as well as rabies. It also includes a parasite treatment, protecting them from fleas, flea tapeworms, 4 types of ticks, ear mites, roundworms, hookworms, and heartworm disease that make their way into your home.
You can TNR a cat on the fly, randomly and luckily, and take that cat to the York SPCA M-Th before 8:30am to have the surgery. Max 2 cats per car, one cat per person. Pick up is the following day. This is ideal for those “last cats” or “lucky catches.”
You can schedule an appointment HERE for TNR with The Nobody’s Cats Foundation in Camp Hill. They typically post appointments a month in advance. If this is your course of action, make sure you have a plan.
Taking a TNR class either online or in person will help you feel confident in your plan. Check our EVENTS page for classes
If you’re looking for medical care, you should try your own vet first, then emergency vets in the area, and then shelters like the Harrisburg Humane Society or York SPCA CARMA .
If you have an indoor pet that you want to get fixed to do the right thing, but can’t afford a private vet, Low Cost Spay and Neuter options like YORK SPCA will allow you to schedule an appointment online. This is usually the most cost-effective method.
If you need vaccines, and you can handle the pet, you can investigate our EVENTS page for pop-up vet clinics in Petsmart or Tractor Supply.
But no, we cannot take your cats that you found.
We cannot take your surrenders because you are moving, allergic, had a baby, never trained it properly, got bored, got a new job, made it mad etc.
Rescues are always full.
These cats did not ask to be born outside, but now that you’ve found them, we implore you to become their caretaker from start to finish. Provide food, shelter, water until they are of age (3lbs, 3 months) and then TNR.
Stop the cycle.
For every one volunteer there are hundreds of “I wish I could but…” reasons why no one can help.
